The tide is finally turning against Big Food's deceptive marketing…
And NOT just here in the United States…
Check this out guys, this is AWESOME...
The UK Court of Appeal recently ruled that Oatly can no longer call its products "milk" because the term should only apply to "normal mammary secretion."
Finally, some recognition that basic biology matters!
This is a huge win for truth in food labeling, but it also highlights something I've been saying for years...
Milk is what mammals DO.
The whole point of being a mammal is that you have mammary glands and make milk for your young. It's completely inaccurate and misleading to call almond or oat juice "milk" just because it's white and liquid.
And here's what's really crazy...
These companies spend millions on marketing to convince you their processed plant juice is somehow "better" than real milk – the same nutritious food humans have thrived on for hundreds of thousands of years!
They even tried trademarking the term "Post Milk Generation"
(More like post-truth generation…)
It doesn’t make any sense…
If plant milk was actually healthier… why do they need to pour so much money into persuading us?
And if real milk is SO bad for humans… why INSIST on stealing the label?
My answer? This is all psychological manipulation to TRICK consumers into thinking it’s a nutritious and fair substitution for the real thing.
And I believe that can lead to SERIOUS consequences for human health…
Because here’s what’s actually inside this garbage:
So, I'm not surprised to see the cracks in plant milks starting to show now in the scientific literature…
Coincidentally, around the same time as this court ruling (and Veganuary)...
A study from the Southern Medical University in China found that plant-based milk drinkers are 12% more likely to report depression (PMID: 39703337)
And here’s where it gets even more interesting…
They also found that those who drank low fat milk were 12% LESS likely to report anxiety.
But full-fat dairy? 16% LOWER risk!
(wonder what the results would suggest for raw milk)
I know this is correlational… but it’s also important to note that the researchers used Mendelian randomization – which is FAR more accurate than your typical observational study.
And the pattern in this study is fascinating to me…
Because it appears the LESS we process and adulterate milk, the better the outcomes for mental health.
I don’t believe that’s a coincidence and it makes PERFECT sense from an evolutionary standpoint…
Milk evolved specifically to nourish developing brains and support optimal gut health – the two systems we now know are intimately connected through the gut-brain axis.
The fact that (raw), full-fat milk contains the perfect balance of:
… isn’t coincidence.
And as you can see, the connection to mental health isn't surprising when you understand human biochemistry.Meanwhile, plant "milks" not only lack these benefits, but often contain anti-nutrients and inflammatory compounds that I believe can actively interfere with mental health.So..Shoutout to the UK because they got this one absolutely RIGHT.“Oat juice” is NOT milkNO plant milks… are MILK!It's time we stop pretending these processed plant foods are equivalent to the nutrient-dense animal foods we evolved eating.Let’s get the same done here in the U.S.!
Welcome to the Remembering.
