Toothpaste = harmful?

February 9, 2025

I get a lot of questions about my skincare routine, deodorant choices, and oral hygiene...

So today, I want to break down EXACTLY what I use (and more importantly, what I DON'T use) when it comes to personal care.

Let's start with oral hygiene because this one triggers people the most...

I don't use toothpaste.

At all.

I know this might sound crazy but hear me out…

Brushing with toothpaste might potentially be harmful in the long run without you even knowing it.

Most conventional toothpaste contains microplastics, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and other questionable additives that you definitely don't want in your mouth.

Even the "natural" toothpaste often contains carrageenan (an algal derivative) which we know damages the gut.

And don't even get me started on fluoride...

While fluoride is promoted as being "anti-cavity," there's compelling evidence that excess fluoride exposure can be harmful to humans (PMID: 36639015)

Think about it too…

The CDC advises parents to consult with their physician before introducing fluoride toothpaste…

It’s because it’s literally a poison.

There have also been reports of children developing dental fluorosis (where teeth become brown and stained) from swallowing too much fluoride…

It’s why leading toothpaste brands have a clear warning label to keep out of reach of children under the age of six (and to seek medical help from POISON CONTROL).

I don’t know guys…

I don't want to brush my teeth with poison… do you?

Because the reality is, you don't need fluoride if you're getting adequate fat-soluble nutrients (especially K2) from animal foods.

Think about this too…

Most Americans brush their teeth with this stuff probably twice per day.

How much of that are they unintentionally swallowing in a week… a month.. a year?

It goes back to the “dose makes the poison” argument.

And it’s the accumulative impact over the LONG TERM that concerns me.

So, I simply use a bamboo toothbrush with boar hair bristles and water.

... that's it.

If you're concerned about bad breath, understand that it typically stems from gut dysbiosis – not a lack of toothpaste.

Fix your diet, fix your breath.

Now onto skincare...

My skincare routine is probably the simplest you'll ever hear and you probably know what I’m about to say…

I don't use ANY soap on my face or body. Ever.

I just rinse with clean water.

Why? Because most skincare products, even the "clean" ones, are loaded with problematic ingredients that can disrupt your skin's natural microbiome.

The ONLY thing I put on my skin is Grass-Fed Tallow for moisturizer.

Animal fats are incredible for the skin because they're biocompatible with our own cell membranes. Unlike conventional moisturizers full of seed oils and synthetic ingredients, tallow contains vitamins A, D, E, K, and essential fatty acids that nourish and protect your skin.

What about deodorant?

You guessed it…

I don't use it.

And all my friends can indeed confirm that I DO NOT stink

But if I absolutely need something…

I'll use apple cider vinegar or rubbing alcohol. But honestly, body odor is largely diet-dependent too.

When you're eating a clean, wholefood diet, you'll find you hardly need deodorant.

Pro tip: Wearing natural fibers like wool and cotton instead of synthetic materials makes a HUGE difference. Wool especially has natural antimicrobial properties and doesn't retain odors like polyester does.

Bonus tip… laundry detergent.

This one's simple – white vinegar.

That's all I use. It costs about $3 for a huge jug and works perfectly.

Most conventional laundry detergents contain 1,4-dioxane (a probable human carcinogen) and other harmful chemicals that can be absorbed through your clothes into your skin.

Yes… even "fragrance-free" detergents often contain these compounds.

The bottom line is this...

Your skin issues, bad breath, body odor – these aren't happening because you're not using enough products.

They're happening because of what you're eating (or what you're putting ON your body).

So before you spend hundreds on fancy skincare products or "natural" toothpaste...

Try simplifying both what goes IN your body and what goes ON it.

Your body knows what to do – just stop interfering with synthetic products and nourish it properly with species-appropriate foods.

Welcome to the Remembering.

It's the only thing I trust to put on my skin (and in my pan!), and I think you'll understand why when you try it.
